  • Video: Motorola & Verizon team up for Z-Wave monitoring service
    Motorola Mobility, Inc. has teamed up with Verizon to bring consumers the connected home. Verizon recently announced its Home Monitoring and Control service. The new service leverages Motorola's 4Home technology to make homes smarter and provide useful insight into energy use. Engadget (10/12)
  • Intel to focus on tablets, winds down digital home group
    Intel's Digital Home Group (DHG) has wound down. The group was responsible for the consumer electronics versions of the Atom SoC family. Last year we saw the launch of the Boxee Box and Google TV, both based on the Intel DHG's CE4100 Atom SoC. At the time Intel had grand plans for the Atom CE line, however today things have changed.   • Video: Verizon smart home strategy includes green focus
    Beyond Verizon’s goal of building a business around the smart home, they also hope to achieve some specific green initiatives, by lowering both their carbon footprint and that of their customers. Jim Gowen, Verizon’s Chief Sustainability Officer was the keynote speaker at the recent 2011 Digital Home Summit and he revealed a two prong strategy for the digital home:“Pardon the electricity pun, but knowledge is power and enabling consumers to proactively and reactively manage their electricity usage through their smart devices is one way to reduce energy consumption.” Telecompetitor (10/12)
  • Smart home cloud services worth $6 billion in 2015
    Smart home sensor network chipset shipments, the majority wireless chipset solutions, will approach 100 million worldwide in 2015, enabling nearly $6 billion in cloud services for energy and home service providers, according to a study by ON World. Metering.com (10/17)
  • Nissan smart home powered by Leaf battery
    Nissan's NSH-2012 Smart House of the Future concept is part of a Smart Community Zero zone showcasing technologies that operate off the power grid. The house stands on stilts to maximize space, with a parking area underneath it. Aside from solar and fuel cells that help make the home independent of the power grid, the polyhedral structure can draw electricity from the battery of an electric car such as the Nissan Leaf.   • New roof shingle is a solar-power system
    Dow Chemical Co. and residential homebuilder D.R. Horton will rollout its “Powerhouse” product — a new kind of roof shingle that’s also a solar power system. Dow called its new solar shingle “a revolutionary new roofing product that combines the performance and protection of a conventional asphalt roof with an integrated photovoltaic (PV) system that powers the home.   • Study: Internet-connected TVs more prevalent in the U.S.

  • Intel: Moore's Law holds steady as Internet devices proliferate
    An Intel executive predicts there will be 15 billion Internet-connected devices in play in the next few years, compared with more than 4 billion today, and that the growth is proof that Moore's Law is holding true.   • ITU group pushes ultra-high-definition TV standard
    The International Telecommunication Union's Study Group on Broadcasting Service has reached an agreement on technical issues for its ultra-high-definition television standard.   • Boxee adds Spotify to its media box

  • Apple aims for new heights with iPhone 4S release
    Apple launched its iPhone 4S sales in seven countries, including the U.S., today amid a global clamor for Steve Jobs' farewell device, according to published reports that say the company already has increased its order with Asian equipment makers by 5 million units to total 15 million handsets. Analysts say Apple may sell 4 million iPhone 4S handsets this weekend, a record launch for an iPhone model. Bloomberg Businessweek (10/14)
  • Survey: More than 20% of phones sold have 4G access capability
    Consumers already have begun snapping up 4G phones, according to an NPD Group study, which says 22% of the smartphones sold in the second quarter were 4G-enabled, compared with 3% a year ago. HTC accounts for 62% of U.S. 4G sales, while Sprint Nextel has the top market share among carriers, given that most of its smartphones are 4G-ready. MediaPost News (10/12)
  • Despite price dips, TV shipments remain on the decline
    Declining consumer spending is hitting worldwide TV shipments, and DisplaySearch predicts there will be no growth from last year through this year, as fewer LCD products are being sold, even with a recent price drop.   • Microsoft: We will support Skype beyond Windows
    Microsoft has closed its $8.5 billion acquisition of Skype and says it plans to continue supporting the voice and video-messaging service across platforms and operating systems. Former Skype CEO Tony Bates, who now reports to Microsoft's CEO, said: "The value proposition of Skype is being multi-platform across different devices, whether it's PCs, desktops, mobile phones, whether it's in the living room, and that's key and that must stay.   • CableLabs CEO will step down

  • Leviton & Ford receive UL certification for Focus electric home charging station
    Leviton, a leading global manufacturer of electrical devices, and Ford Motor Company announced the new Ford Electric Vehicle (EV) Home Charging Station has achieved UL certification for UL 2231, UL 2251 and UL 2594.   • Honeywell launches home security app for Android
    Honeywell has launched a new application for Android devices, letting users control their security systems and view live, streaming video from any remote location. This version is the latest application of Honeywell’s Total Connect 2.0 Remote Services, which allows consumers to utilize the Internet, smartphones, cameras and more to stay connected to their homes and businesses wherever they are.     EnerNOC Inc., a provider of energy-management applications for the smart grid, has released the latest version of its energy-management platform.
